You Not Allowed to Hold All The Sorrow
You Not Allowed to Hold All The Sorrow
2024
The artwork features red gravel stones arranged on a mesh net facing inwards. These stones were sourced from the area of Al-Kunayyisa, an Arab village that was occupied and ethnically cleansed in 1948. Today, the village's ruins are difficult to locate, as they are surrounded by an industrial area.
The artwork aims to draw attention to our surroundings and encourage us to become more aware of our space. It also prompts internal reflection on the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the ongoing war. The title symbolizes a perspective that ignores the pain and suffering of others, leading to a one-dimensional view of the situation.
In discussing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, narrative is a crucial aspect, encompassing the events referred to as the Independence War (מלחמת העצמאות) and the Nakba (النَّكْبَة). In this piece from an ongoing series, I have chosen to shift my focus from the narrative I was taught and further explore and learn the narrative of Palestinians. This creates a space to hold both narratives and opens up the possibility to reimagine a new future for living on the land. Through this work, I am re-creating my narrative as an Israeli.
